Your First Turban: A Sacred Journey with Charkhi
Share
At Charkhi, it's our honor to help you tie your very first turban. Whether you're beginning your spiritual journey in Sikhi, exploring Sikh identity, or wearing a Sikh turban for a cultural, ceremonial, or respectful purpose — you are about to wear a sacred symbol that has represented strength, dignity, and discipline for centuries.
How Long Should a Sikh Turban Be?
This is one of the most common questions we hear from beginners and even some seasoned wearers looking to try new styles.
Let me start with my own experience to give you a frame of reference:
- Height: 5 feet 9.5 inches (yes, every fraction counts!)
- Build: Small to medium
- My Turban Sizes: 4 meters and 5 meters (depending on style or occasion)
Turban Length Guide
If you're new to Sikhi and just beginning to grow your Kesh (hair), we recommend starting with a 2 to 3 meter turban. As your hair grows longer and you start tying a Jhoorah (topknot/bun), you can gradually transition to longer turbans.
- Beginner: 2 to 3 meters
- Intermediate: 4 to 5 meters
- Traditional / Dumalla Style: 6+ meters
At Charkhi, we offer turbans in a wide range of lengths — 4.5 to 8 meters, which suits most wearers. While 2-meter and 8+ meter turbans are rare.
Pro Tip: If you're unsure, buy a turban 1 meter longer than needed. You can always cut the excess, but you can’t add more cloth later!
Width of the Turban
The standard width of an adult Sikh turban is approximately 1 meter, while kids’ turbans are typically half that width. This width gives enough coverage to wrap comfortably and securely around your head.
Choosing Turban Colors
Your turban is not just a piece of cloth — it’s an expression of identity, mood, and intention. Some choose colors based on tradition or occasion (e.g. navy for solemn events, saffron for spiritual energy, or white for peace).
Personally, I have turbans in almost every color imaginable, and I love color-coordinating with my outfits. But my heart will always belong to white — serene, timeless, and powerful.
Need inspiration? At Charkhi, we offer a wide spectrum of turban colors, so you can choose what truly resonates with you.
Turban Fabrics and Materials
We understand that comfort and breathability matter, especially if you’re wearing your turban all day. At Charkhi, we offer three high-quality turban fabrics:
- Full Voile – Our most popular choice. A great balance of comfort and durability.
- Rubia – Best for structured looks or ceremonial wear. Strong and bold.
Note: Your turban becomes softer and more comfortable with time. Some of my most loved turbans are years old — soft, perfectly worn-in, and wrinkle-free.
